Wikström makes a big decision: to leave his alcoholic wife and give up his work as a travelling shirt salesman. The middle-aged poker player uses his savings to buy a failing restaurant in a forgotten Helsinki courtyard. Soon, the big heart beating within the taciturn, gruff man is revealed – when Wikström offers work to a younger man who finds himself in a seemingly hopeless situation. As is customary in Aki Kaurismäki’s films, flashes of human kindness, friendship and humour cut through the gloom, giving an optimistic flavour to this bittersweet comedy. The Other Side of Hope was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director at this year’s Berlinale.
